We are so thankful to Juanito "El Abuelo" Gómez for facilitating this cultural exchange, between La Rueda de los Fundadores based in Havana, and Rueda Con Ritmo based in San Francisco, California. It was performed on December 28, 2023 in Havana, Cuba at Los Jardines de 1830 (Mil Ocho). This choreography is our attempt to recreate the style, rhythm, and movements of the original Ruedas de Casino as they were first danced in the late 1950s. All of the calls are the "pasillos clásicos," the original movements from that era, the music was recorded in 1958 by Conjunto Roberto Faz, one of groups whose music inspired the original Ruedas, and the timing of the dance is "on 7," one of the most common rhythms used by the Fundadores, and still widely used by Casino dancers in Cuba today. -------------- Muchísimas gracias a Juanito "El Abuelo" Gómez por hacer posible este intercambio cultural entre La Rueda de los Fundadores de la Habana, y Rueda Con Ritmo de San Francisco, California. Rueda Con Ritmo's theme for San Francisco's 2024 parade was "Que Viva Changó," in honor of the Oricha originally from Nigeria and now widely honored in Cuba and throughout the world. Our three choreographies include many different Cuban dances: Baile Campesino (country dances), Baile Folclórico (Afro-Cuban dances for Changó), Rumba Guaguancó, Salsa-Casino, and Conga. RCR won first place in the Caribbean category for the parade this year. Congratulations and thanks to all of the dancers and volunteers who paraded with us! Special thanks to Adan Perez for the great video footage and to Cristina and Yerba Buena Gardens Festival for hosting most of our rehearsals again this year.
